Hastings Electronics and Radio Club offers a full range of training to obtain Amateur Radio transmitting licences. These fall into three groups; Foundation, Intermediate and Full Licence and can be further supplemented by Morse code if required.
It is now possible to obtain a transmitting license and get on the air with just 12 hours of training. Read on.
Foundation
Training takes about 12 hours usually held over 3 Saturday mornings. The course includes theory and practice of transmitters and receivers, how to operate an amateur station and licence conditions. There is a practical demonstration and your chance to get on air at one of our member’s fully fitted radio room. You then take a simple exam and if you pass you can apply for a foundation licence. The foundation licence will allow you to receive and transmit on certain amateur bands with modest power. This will allow you to talk to other radio amateurs over Europe and under certain circumstances further a field. This foundation licence will allow you to try out amateur radio to see if you like it and want to take it further.
Intermediate
The next stage of training is the intermediate license. This is a further course of study of about twelve 2-hour sessions including some practice at building a radio project. Additional transmitting and receiving knowledge is gained and another exam is taken. A pass allows you to apply for an intermediate licence, and access to additional amateur bands with more modes of operation and power allowed.
Full
The full licence is obtained by studying for the Amateur Radio Exam (ARE). This usually comprises of 2 hours sessions over about 20 to 30 weeks, and another two-part exam. A pass will allow you access to all amateur bands and modes, up to the full legal power Morse Code is no longer a requirement for a full licence in the UK or in many other countries.
Training, tests and fees
All of the training is carried out by club members at local level. You will not have to go away to sit an exam. There is a small fee to pay to cover club membership, insurance, materials, hiring of rooms and sundry fees, but these are all reasonable, but we do encourage you to join the club.
If you are interested in any of the above please do not hesitate to contact one of the Committee below, or come along to one of our meetings for an informal chat. You will be made most welcome.
